Product Description
Advaita Vedanta has coloured Indian life in many aspects. It is one of the most imressive thought-system of India. To a great extent it satisfies the deep requirements of mataphysics and the claims of logic and reason. It has been compared with the philosophies, both eastern and western. As a result many books and monographs have been written on the subjects. This is but natural, condisering the appeal that Advaita Vedanta has for the modern world. Many modern preceptors of philosophy have followed the doctrine of Sankara with or without changes. Advaita is a discriminative harmonisation of different perspectives and spiritual exeriences. Being the expression of the plenary experience of Reality, it occupies a pre-eminent place among the major philosophical system viz.

Review
Robert Wolfe's book is a treasure of insights and wisdom. If you liked I Am That (Nisargadatta) or  Who Am I? (Ramana Maharshi) you will love Living Nonduality.
--Jerry Jones, co-author of From Here to Nirvana

This quote from J. Krishnamurti opens the Preface to Living Nonduality:  "Is there such a thing as the absolute, the immeasurable, and is there any relation between that immensity and our everyday living?" --J. Krishnamurti

Product Description
Living Nonduality is about the nature of living without division. In recent decades, many in the Western world have begun to look anew at the ancient spiritual teachings from the East: the Zen Buddhism of Japan; the Tibetan Buddhism of the Dalai Lama; the Tao of China; the Sufis of the Muslim Middle East; the Vedanta scriptures of India. What all of these spiritual traditions have in common is a viewpoint which is different from mainstream Christianity, Judaism and Islam.
How is it different, and what are the differences? Nonduality and the direct and immediate experience of universal Oneness, often called self-realization or enlightenment, is explored in 238 brief monographs.

Product Description
'The nature of truth is to be free from contradictions. We approach nearer and nearer truth as we fi nd less and less contradictions. The only thing which is so free is non-duality'...'This may be achieved at fi rst, as the Upanishads say, in lightning fl ashes, in fl eeting momentary glimpses, but later this must be established into permanency. You should stabilize them through self-recollectedness to be done throughout the day, and through the constant reminder that the world is not separate from yourself. It is not enough to grasp the intellectual truth of non-duality'...'As the man of realisation knows the world to be an idea, a mental construct, the sense of unifi cation and love to all mankind is simultaneously its materialization, for he knows no difference between idea and matter. Hence too he wishes all beings to be happy, loves even his enemy, wishes him no harm, for he knows the truth of universal self-identifi cation. Thus to the extent a man realises the truth, he can do good and no more'...'Any kind of difference means contradiction. Nothing whatsoever other than the Atman exists. If you think there is another entity, whether man or God, there is no truth. This is the teaching since time immemorial of those who have inquired into truth.' - V. SUBRAHMANYA IYER

Product Description
The Vedantic myth differs from the Jungian myth in that there is a point of completion, or a winning of the game, which is not true in Jung's conception. For Jung, the process of individuation is an ongoing process which is never completed. The Vedantin would look at Jung's process of individuation differently, in reference to the meaning of life. The nature of the Self revealed in the Upanisads is limitless, non-dual, and whole. Liberation is knowledge of this Self which equates to the attainment of wholeness, the apparent lack of wholeness being due only to Self-Ignorance. Self-Knowledge is the recognition and differentiation of an already existent wholeness which is both transcendent and imminent to all of one's perceptions.

About the Author

She currently teaches in Berkeley, California and is a faculty member at the California Institute of Integral Studies for the East-West Psychology Department. Product Description
Psychological theories are based on the experiences of the one constructing the theory. If the Vedantic Self becomes a differentiated component of one's experience, then it will naturally weave its way into one's psychological model of the mind.... New knowledge affects the old. Such has always been the case. As we go on learning and differentiating our experience, our theories change to accomodate our growth. In this case, if the existence of the Vedantic Self is differentiated from the psyche, then new knowledge is produced in that act of differentiation which then must be accounted for in the formulation of the psychological theories that inform our work.... According to Vedanta, it is the lack of differentiation of the Self from the psyche and world that is responsible for our pain and suffering, and so the solution to our problems lies ultimately in Self-knowledge. Psychological health in Vedanta depends on this differentiation. To the degree that a person identifies the Self with that which it is not, through either projection or superimposition, to that degree, the person suffers.....

Review
Clear, easy to comprehend, and concise, this small book is packed full of pertinent information (on)the core issues of life. --Yoga International Magazine, 1999

As a scholar and practitioner of Vedanta, I can say with confidence that this is the best introductory text on Vedanta available in the English language. It manages to communicate this subtle and complex philosophy in terms that are clear and, as the title suggests, simple. But it does so without oversimplifying. I regularly assign this text to my students (college students taking introductory courses on Indic religions) and they have consistently praised it for the clear and engaging style in which it is written. One student reported to me that when she started reading it, she could not put it down until she had read it cover-to-cover. It really is that engaging. It is, of course, an introductory text. I recommend that readers interested in the various schools of Vedanta other than the modern Ramakrishna-Vivekananda-inspired interpretation of Advaita look to other works. But for novices, and especially for those interested in Vedanta as a spiritual practice rather than from a purely scholarly perspective, this book can't be beat. --Unsolicited comments from a professor

Bodhasara: An Eighteenth Century Sanskrit Treasure by Narahari

ISBN: 978-1-4537-7567-7
Format: Paperback
Pages: 582
List Price: $29.28
Synopsis: Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Bodhasara by Narahari is a fine example of wisdom literature enlivened by the renaissance spirit evident in India during the pre-colonial eighteenth century. While honoring the ancient principles of Vedic, Tantric and Yogic traditions, Narahari speaks with a modern voice, full of confidence and intelligence. Bodhasara is a Sanskrit treasure and a fine example of the power of this language. Narahari's aim is to convey the experience of jivanmukti, liberation while living. Long held to be too elusive for words to describe, Narahari employs a powerful and poetic command of Sanskrit to achieve his aim. Bodhasara is reasoned and poetic, learned and irreverent, sarcastic and playful, thoughtful and humorous. Eschewing didactic instruction, Narahari shows you the world through his eyes, via intertwined threads of personal understanding and poetic imagery. He is fearless about discarding worthless adherence to form and ever confident in the natural purity of existence. In Bodhasara you will not find a new teaching about jivanmukti. But read the whole work and you may find Narahari has taken you by the hand and led you to its very edge. This book contains the source Sanskrit text by Narahari in both Devanagiri and Roman scripts, along with the English translation. Review
I am sure it will assist many who are becoming increasingly confused and disillusioned by Neo Advaita, and may turn to the traditional approach. ~Alan Jacobs, President of the Ramana Foundation UK I heartily recommend this book. ~James Swartz, teacher and author Dennis Waite offers necessary help to sincere seekers who wish to learn how to discern between the diamond-like brilliance of authentic Advaita-Vedanta, from the rhinestone approaches represented by popular neo-Advaita. ~Mariana Caplan, Ph.D., author of "Halfway Up the Mountain"This is a valuable addition to Advaitic literature and should be read by all those who are perplexed as to the truth of this noble tradition. ~The Mountain Path, TiruvannamalaiIn his new work: ENLIGHTENMENT, Dennis Waite rises to the challenge of this modern spiritual dilemma confronting the key issues between the traditional and modern approaches to Advaita/Non-Duality head-on. In this regard, he is a lone, rare voice, and should be commended for his diligent work. "oy Whenary, author of "The Texture of Being"

Product Description
The clearest book that has ever been written on the subject of enlightenment, it provides a detailed examination of the satsang phenomenon (and its more extreme, neo-Advaita variant), contrasting these approaches with the traditional methods passed down from teacher to disciple for over a thousand years. What is enlightenment? What is it not? - exposes the myths and defines this misused term once and for all.

Goes way beyond self help books to examine belief itself - in particular, the belief that we are something individual and separate. As a friendly and experienced guide, he demonstrates that we are nothing other than happiness itself! Dr. Greg Goode, Doctor of western philosophy, New York. An insightful overview of the great questions of life itself: a compelling inner tapestry that encourages the reader to willingly embrace life being exactly as it is. Readable, relevant and recommended. Chuck Hillig, author of Enlightenment for Beginners Takes the mainstream by the hand and pragmatically leads them away from where they believe that they are in their minds, to where they actually are here and now in Heart. The guide is friendly, clear and intelligent, with well documented research. Katie Davis, author of Awake Living Joy Fluid and engaging, I highly recommend it. It serves to reaffirm Dennis Waite as one of the foremost contemporary writers on the subject of Advaita Vedanta in the West. Paula Marvelly, The Teachers of One

Product Description
A work of popular philosophy from an Eastern perspective, this analyses our perennial search for happiness and explains why we can't find it in modern lifestyles, pleasure or fame. It enlists the help of polls by sociologists, findings of evolutionary psychologists, historians, philosophers and others, as well as drawing on personal experience and examples, to show that true happiness is to be found in realizing that we are not separate from everything else-whether people, objects, or happiness itself.

Review
So many books of personal philosophy and psychology today get bogged down in bias and belief. This is a rare exception. Philip Jacobs cuts to the heart of the philosophy of non duality, writing from personal experience, and leads us down a simple path that all can follow. The more people that buy this book the better the world will be because everyone will be happy with their own circumstances. Martin Redfern, Senior Producer, BBC Radio Science Unit Philip Jacobs shows a profound understanding of the unity of life and the interconnectedness of everything within the world. He shows how events which may appear to be random can also be seen as part of our life's path when looked at on a wider time scale. He gives clear guidance on how to surrender to illness and see it as a positive event through which the individual can grow. He shows the importance of remaining in the now, where the action happens and where comfort and solace can be obtained. He has a fund of the most wonderful stories to illustrate his points. He discusses the true meaning of freedom and takes the view that we are all part of a single unity and that everything about our lives is taken care of when looked at from this broader perspective. This is a compelling and life enhancing book for anyone having to face a long term illness, but also so wise that it can help any of us to understand our path in life even if we are not so severely challenged. Peter Fenwick, Scientific and Medical Network

Product Description
One Self expresses the truth at the heart of the world's mystical and philosophical traditions in a simple, direct and practical way. It shows us how to find our true self that is ever present and is beyond change and suffering. We are then able to trust the process of life's unfolding, as we are led on a journey to discover a great treasure that we all possess yet are unaware of. It is in doing this that we also prepare ourselves for that ultimate moment of letting go, the death of the physical body.

"a reviewer is expected to find and tell the weaknesses in a book review, and it is hard to fault this book."

--Henry Swift, Science Within Consciousness, 1999

Product Description
`Enlightenment' (or `Self-realisation') is a phenomenon which finds frequent mention in the spiritual context, but how far does the existence of such a state tally with modern science? Is it at all scientifically possible for such a state to exist? Can there be life without the ego, a state in which, as the sage Ramana Maharshi said, `the mind is dead'? If so, can a person discharge his normal duties in life in such a state? So far, science has said a solid no to the existence of any such condition. No such state has been described in the text-books of medicine or psychology. Science has been unable to explain a state devoid of the ego, where normal life can contin-ue. But now Nitin Trasi, in his book `THE SCIENCE OF ENLIGHTENMENT' shows how such a state can be fully and most satisfactorily explained in scientific terms - an explanation which he also reconciles with conventional spiritual teachings.

This is a remarkable book in that it gives, perhaps for the very first time, a mystic's own inside account of the phenomena of Enlightenment and Liberation and yet does so in a totally scientific, astoundingly rational way, aided no doubt by the fact that the writer himself is a medical doctor. It defines these phenomena in precise scientific terms, gives a detailed and in-depth psychological description of these states, and tells what actually happens in the mind in the course of these phenomena.

Traditional beliefs are put in a rational per-spective and spiritual terms are explained in a simple but scientific way. The author also dispels many of the myths surrounding these topics, and gives a clear differentiation between states of trance and the state of Liberation. The traditional paths of bhakti, karma and jnana mentioned in Hinduism are elucidated with great clari-ty. The philosophy of different sages and traditions, from Advaita to Buddhism, Sufism to Christianity, Taoism to Zen, Kabir to Krishna-murti, are all perfectly blended into one continuous stream to form a veritable `philosophia perennis.'

Finally, this book gives convincing, practical answers to all the commonly recurring questions of the average spiritual enthusiast (`seeker').

In general, a primer and at the same time a complete ency-clopedia of spirituality, scientifically written, and yet so simply presented that even a spiritual novice can easily make the most of it. A must-read for all researchers in science and religion.

Product Description
Enlightenment has been eagerly sought for generations as a means to remove the limitations that compromise one's happiness. Vedanta, the science of self-inquiry, has been described as the grandfather of all enlightenment traditions. James Swartz explains and unfolds the methods of Vedanta in his direct style, while unraveling the myths and mysteries behind the enlightened state. But How to Attain Enlightenment does not simply present one more set of spiritual techniques; it presents a comprehensive body of knowledge and practice that has successfully directed the inquiry into the nature of reality by untold thousands of enlightened beings.

The author starts from the point of view of any individual seeking happiness and logically walks the seeker through the whole spiritual path. The book explains how self-inquiry affects the lives of those who practice it, including its effects on personality, relationships, and the mind. How to Attain Enlightenment considers the qualifications necessary for enlightenment, as well as the obstacles encountered on all spiritual paths, and unfolds proven methods. The ancient teachings of Vedanta, once available only to those who could receive them directly from the sages of India, are now accessible to anyone with a hunger for freedom and enlightenment.

About the Author
James Swartz grew up in Montana and attended Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin and the University of California at Berkeley before finding his niche in the world of business. He saw great success as a businessman, but in 1967 he experienced a major epiphany that turned him away from that path. Instead, he traveled to India on a spiritual journey, searching for the path to enlightenment. It was here that he learned of the famous Indian sage Swami Chinmayananda, whose knowledge and teachings proved to be the means to set James free.

Now a disciple of the sage, James travels extensively to cities in America, Europe, and India to hold seminars on Vedanta, the science of self-inquiry.James has previously self-published two non-fiction books: Meditation: An Inquiry into the Self (1998) and The Mystery Beyond the Trinity (1998).

Product Description
The novelty of this book consists of the fact that it introduces the reader to the basic tenets of Advaita Vedanta in three independent but complementary ways: scripturally, rationally and experientially. All the three elements are usually found intertwined in accounts of Advaita Vedanta. They are presented distinctly here in the hope that each perspective will enrich one's understanding of Advaita Vedanta as a whole and also allow the reader to form his or her own opinion about the relative merits of each approach.

Product Description
Often associated with the great ninth century sage Shankara, Advaita Vedanta is the most important and most influential of the schools of Indian philosophy; however, unlike Western philosophy, its goal is spiritual liberation in this life. The purpose of this book—the only comprehensive introduction to the tradition, based upon its primary sources—is to make possible a study of Advaita Vedanta in its classical form as it functioned in Indian culture as a living philosophy. Translations from all major Sanskrit writings are included, as well as selections from all of the most important representatives of this central philosophy of India.

Review
This book will greatly contribute to a deeper understanding of this important movement [Advaita], sweeping the West, and which eventually leads to Self Realisation. (Alan Jacobs, Chairman , Ramana Maharshi Foundation UK) There are many places to find advaita teachings - in ancient texts, modern books, in satsang, and on the Internet. Dennis Waite has found them all. He writes as a friendly tour guide, presenting the teachings with simplicity, humor and deep understanding. (Dr. Gregory Goode, PhD (Philosophy), Philosphical Counselor, New York)

Product Description
A comprehensive, yet entertaining introduction to Advaita, the non-dual philosophy which provides a completely reasonable explanation for who we are and the nature of the universe. There are many self-help approaches promising enlightenment and happiness but most are illogical and lack any proven capability. Advaita has a guru-disciple tradition stretching back for several thousand years and can guarantee the sincere seeker a progressive path to self-realization. A 21st Century treatment of this ancient eastern philosophy, this book addresses all of the issues that are covered by both traditional teachers from the lineage of Shankara and by modern satsang teaching and Direct Path methods stemming from Ramana Maharshi and Krishna Menon. Topics are explained in an accessible and readable manner, using amusing quotations and stories along with an abundance of metaphors from a wide variety of sources.

Walking with the Saint: Spiritual Practices & Insights to Enhance Your Journey Through Life
Author: Mary Anne Ayer
Editor/Commentator:
Publisher: Tenth Gate Publishing, Wilmington, DE
ISBN: 0975594702
Format: Paperback
Pages: 324
List Price: £13.00
Synopsis: Editorial Reviews

Product Description
In Walking With The Saint, a spiritual practitioner and teacher takes the reader on her journey through Christian mysticism and an exploration of Oriental religion based upon her travels and in-depth study of ancient Sanskrit texts, along with the meeting of yogis, sages and a living saint.

The author, Mary Anne Ayer, provides insights and analysis of a topic rarely understood on this level. She offers explanations that readers may not get from religious institutions, as well as a gateway to the benefits of spiritual practices and enlightenment.

About the Author
Mary Anne Ayer began asking more about spirituality and metaphysics than her Catholic upbringing and parochial school provided. She graduated from the University of Washington with a B.A. in cultural anthropology and became interested in meditation and Christian mysticism. In search of more answers, she attended an intense two and a half year course of study in India in Vedanta in the Sanskrit medium. This was a twelve-year course condensed into two and a half years, designed to create monks and nuns who would teach the ancient scriptures embodied in "the path of knowledge" to students around the world. Mary Anne was a teacher of Vedanta, meditation and Eastern philosophy and religion for over ten years in Seattle, Vancouver Canada and Boston.

With a profound longing for greater insights and spiritual experiences, May Anne expanded her understanding with the study of other systems of Yoga such as Hatha, Kriya and Raja Yoga. In her search she traveled throughout India meeting many yogis and sages. She broadened her search to the study and practices of Tibetan and Zen Buddhism in monasteries and retreat centers as well.

Receiving a Masters Degree at Tufts University to teach foreign languages, as well as the study of foreign language at Harvard University and The Sorbonne in Paris, she was able to study the writings of Spanish and French speaking saints and mystics of Catholicism in their native tongue.

Her studies and her spiritual practice culminated in the meeting of a Living Saint and with the meditation practices of the Sant Mat (Path of the Masters) tradition, where she has been a student and practitioner for the past 20 years. She felt compelled to write about her experiences not only to benefit her children but for others who may share her interest in spirituality.

She now lives in Naples, Florida with her husband and two children.

Review
Sri Ramana Maharshi (Tamil: ) (December 30, 1879 April 14, 1950), born Venkataraman Iyer, was a Hindu sage. He was born to a Tamil-speaking Brahmin family in Tiruchuzhi, Tamil Nadu. After having attained liberation at the age of 16, he left home for Arunachala, a mountain considered sacred by Hindus, at Tiruvannamalai, and lived there for the rest of his life. Although born a Brahmin, after having attained moksha he declared himself an "Atiasrami", a Sastraic state of unattachment to anything in life and beyond all caste restrictions. The ashram that grew around him, Sri Ramana Ashram is situated at the foothill of Arunchala, to the west to the pilgrimage town of Tiruvannamalai. Sri Ramana maintained that the purest form of his teachings was the powerful silence which radiated from his presence and quieted the minds of those attuned to it. He gave verbal teachings only for the benefit of those who could not understand his silence. His verbal teachings were said to flow from his direct experience of Consciousness (Atman) as the only existing reality. When asked for advice, he recommended self-enquiry as the fastest path to moksha. Though his primary teaching is associated with Non-dualism, Advaita Vedanta, and Jnana yoga, he recommended Bhakti to those he saw were fit for it, and gave his approval to a variety of paths and practices. This book is a tribute to the great sage. --Wikipedia

The Sermon on the Mount according to Vedanta
Author: Swami Prabhavananda
Editor/Commentator: Swami Prabhavananda
Publisher: Vedanta Press, Hollywood
ISBN: 0874810507
Format: Paperback
Pages: 127
List Price: £7.95
Synopsis: Editorial Reviews

Product Description
The Sermon on the Mount represents the essence of both Christ's teachings and the teachings of Vedanta. Christ said, "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God." "The kingdom of God is within." "Be ye perfect...." Theologians are apt to explain away these teachings, but we believe Christ meant exactly what he said. Read in this book how Vedanta goes to the heart of Christ's teachings.

From the Publisher
A book on the Sermon on the Mount should be no novelty in a Christian community. But when that books is written by a Hindu swami, a follower of Vedanta and The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna, that certainly is unusual. More so since the swami extols the Sermon as though it were a scripture of his own.

Beautiful as the this interpretation is in itself, it is presented by Swami Prabhavananda not as a far-off, scarcely attainable ideal, which is the way most Occidentals read the Sermon, but as a practical program of daily living and conduct. So clear is the Swami’s reading of this great scripture, that many a Christian by means of it will discover a simpler approach to the teachings of his Master, more direct than any he had found heretofore.

Review
"Harry Oldmeadow's insighful reflection on the life and writing of Swami Abhishiktananda (Henri Le Saux, d. 1973) -- missionary, ashram pioneer, theologian of the Hindu-Christian encounter, and spiritual explorer -- is a valuable contribution to our understanding of interreligious learning today. Building on biographical studies of Le Saux, Oldmeadow probes further the personal and theological dynamics underlying Le Saux's questions and insights, reading him in accord with the perennial philosophy tradition of Schuon, Coomaraswamy, Nasr, and Guénon. Oldmeadow's thought experiment is refreshing, provocative, and worthy of close attention by everyone interested in Le Saux and his legacy." --This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition.

"The man is a living wonder ... I know of no living writer who begins to rival him." -- Huston Smith, author of The World's Religions and Why Religion Matters

"[Schuon] has contributed in a unique way to the true understanding of Hinduism in the West." -- Dr. V. Raghavan (Foreword to the 1959 edition)

Product Description
First published in India, this is a revised translation of essays that elucidate the universal principles for which the Advaita-Vedanta is so revered, encompassing in its amplitude every legitimate spiritual modality. In the chapter, "The Meaning of Caste," the reader is afforded an intelligent and spiritually vibrant way of understanding the archetypal roots that differentiate humankind. "The Meaning of Race" demolishes current errors and prejudices while depicting that genius which is unique to each race. "Principles and Criteria of Art" insists on the necessity of objective criteria for beauty. The shock to the Western readers upon encountering this idea gives way to joy, arising from the restoration of art's mission of transmitting the qualities of intelligence, beauty and nobility that are at once the natural and necessary dimensions of the human condition, as well as the projection of Truth and Beauty into the world of forms.

The modern outlook--despite its professed "objectivity"--recoils from the notion at the foundation of all traditional wisdom that there is an absolute, transcendent Reality. Whereas consciousness of the Absolute and its infinitude constitutes man's very reason for being, therefore his salvation and his happiness. Schuon's perspective is that of Sanatana Dharma, the "eternal religion," which is based on the intrinsic nature of things. For Western minds, which have a tendency toward irreducible alternatives, Schuon's crystalline yet musical delineations of the levels of reality come as a refreshing relief. At the root of this discernment is neither mere reasoning nor a willing of "what should be," but a disinterested contemplation of the metaphysical transparency of phenomena.

Advaita is a spiritual philosophy based on the Upanishads, older than most other religious systems we know about but also the most logical and scientific in its approach. This book is a systematic treatment of Advaita which demystifies it, differentiating between approaches and teachers, enabling you to decide which approach is most suitable for you. It compares the scriptures of traditional Advaita with the words of contemporary sages and neo-Advaita. Should we ignore the mind? Is the world real? Is there anything we can do to become enlightened? These questions and many more are addressed, with explanations given in their own words from those who discovered the truth. A massively comprehensive, definitive work.

TAT SAT
The Brahman, the Supreme Being, is referred to by three words OM, Tat and Sat. The Brahman is the ultimate reality. It is pure consciousness devoid of all attributes (nirguna) and all categories of the intellect (nirvisesa). Being associated with Its potency (Maya), The Brahman appears as the qualified one, Saguna Brahman, or the Lord (Iswara) who is the Creator, Preserver or Destroyer of the world which is nothing, but His appearance. It is thus, because of Maya, the Brahman is said to be the Creator of the world.

Maya is not pure illusion. It is not only absence of knowledge, but also positive wrong knowledge and is, therefore, Bhavarupa (of positive nature). It is indescribable. It is neither existent nor non-existent, nor both. It is not existent for the Brahman alone is the existent (sat). It is not non-existent for it is responsible for the appearance of the world. It cannot be both existent and non-existent as such a statement is self-contradictory. It is thus neither real nor unreal; it is Mithya; but is not a non-entity like the horn of a hare. A rope is mistaken as a snake. The rope is the ground on which the snake is super-imposed. When right knowledge arises, this error vanishes. The relation between the rope and the snake is neither that of identity nor of difference, nor of both. It is unique and known as non-difference (tadatmya). Similarly, the Brahman is the ground on which the world appears through the power, Maya. When right knowledge dawns, the real nature of the so-called Jiva is realized, and Maya vanishes.

Tat Sat is a book detailing Advaita Vedanta - the mainstay of the Indian Philosophy, in its intricacies. It forms part of the rich content of Vedic literature in English on the World Wide Web portal Sri Sathya Sai Veda Pratishtan at www.vedamu.org.

Product Description

This book focuses on the analysis of pure consciousness as found in Advaita Vedanta, one of the main schools of Indian philosophy. According to this tradition, reality is identified as Brahman, the world is considered illusory, and the individual self is identified with the absolute reality. Advaitins have various approaches to defend this argument, the central one being the doctrine of 'awareness only' (cinmatra). Following this stream of argument, what consciousness grasps immediately is consciousness itself, and the notions of subject and object arise due to ignorance. This doctrine categorically rejects the plurality of individual selves and the reality of objects of perception.

Timalsina analyzes the nature of consciousness as understood in Advaita. He first explores the nature of reality and pure consciousness, and then moves on to analyze ignorance as propounded in Advaita. He then presents Advaita arguments against the definitions of 'object' of cognition found in various other schools of Indian philosophy. In this process, the positions of two rival philosophical schools of Advaita and Madhva Vedanta are explored in order to examine the exchange between these two schools. The final section of the book contrasts the Yogacara and Advaita understandings of consciousness. Written lucidly and clearly, this book reveals the depth and implications of Indian metaphysics and argument. It will be of interest to scholars of Indian philosophy and Religious Studies.

Sthaneshwar Timalsina is Assistant Professor in the Department of Religious Studies, San Diego State University, US. His research interests include Tantric traditions, literary theory, and ritual studies. His first book, Seeing and Appearance, was published in 2006 by Shaker Verlag.

Jivanmukti in Transformation: Embodied Liberation in Advaita and Neo-Vedanta

Product Description
Liberation (mukti) is a central concern in Hinduism, particularly in Advaita (nondual) Vedanta, perhaps the best known school of Hindu thought. There has been vigorous debate and analysis about the possibility and nature of liberation while living (jivanmukti) in Advaita from the time of Sankara, the school's founder, to the present day. While the general conclusion seems to be that one can achieve living liberation, members of the Advaita tradition also regularly express reservations about, or describe limitations to, full liberation while embodied. Jivanmukti in Transformation examines the development and transformation of the concept of jivanmukti from the Upanisads to the modern era. It gives the most thorough treatment of the scholastic Advaita tradition on liberation while living, makes the novel argument for a distinct "Yogic Advaita" tradition found in the Yogavasistha and Jivanmuktiviveka, and explores the modern "neo-Vedanta" view of jivanmukti, which has been influenced by modern Western concepts like global ecumenism and humanistic social concern for all.

About the Author
Andrew O. Fort is Professor of Asian Religions at Texas Christian University. His previous publications include Living Liberation in Hindu Thought (coedited with Patricia Y. Mumme), also published by SUNY Press and The Self and Its States: A States of Consciousness Doctrine in Advaita Vedanta.

About the Author
Balakrishna Menon (Balan) was born in Ernakulam, Kerala in a devout Hindu noble family called "Poothampalli" of Makia Awwa and Kuttan Menon. Upon his birth, his father called for an astrologer, who stated that Balan's birth was an auspicious one, and that he was destined for greatness. He graduated from Madras University in 1939 and went on to do graduate study in English literature from Lucknow University . [edit] Initiation and disciple hood Swami Chinmayananda on the day of his Sannyas initiation, standing on the right of Guru Swami Sivananda and other disciples, Feb 25, 1949, Maha Shivratri Day, Rishikesh. Balan entered the field of journalism, and worked for The National Herald, where he felt he could influence political, economic and social reform in India. While working at the Herald, he went to meet Swami Sivananda at Ananda Kutir, Swami Sivananda's ashram in Rishikesh as he planned to write an article critical of Hindu monks, but instead his life was changed forever and he became interested in the Hindu spiritual path. [3][4]. Balakrishna Menon took sanyas deeksha(monkhood) from Swami Sivananda on Mahashivratri day in February, 25, 1949 [5], and was thus given the name Swami Chinmayananda Saraswati - the one who is saturated in Bliss and pure Consciousness. He stayed at Sivanada Ashram, Rishikesh for several years, and subsequently Swami Sivananda saw further potential in Swami Chinmayananda and sent him to study under a guru in the Himalayas - Swami Tapovan Maharaj under whom he studied for the following years. Swami Tapovan Maharaj was known for his rigid teaching style, to the point where he told Swami Chinmayananda that he would only say everything once, and at anytime he would ask questions to him. Even with these extreme terms, Swami Chinmayananda stayed with Tapovan maharaj until the very end of 8 years. Being a journalist at heart, Swami Chinmayananda wanted to make this pure knowledge available to all people of all backgrounds, even though Tapovan Maharaj had initially advised against it. Through gentle suasion and a promise that he would, as the Ganga, take the knowledge to the plains for the benefit of all Indians, with Tapovan Maharaj's blessings, he left the Himalayas in 1952, to teach the world the knowledge of Vedanta.
