Bhagavad Gita Author: Editor/Commentator: Swami Gambhirananda Publisher: Advaita Ashrama ISBN: 8175050411 Format: Hardcover Pages: 826 List Price: £18.00 |
Synopsis:
Editorial Reviews Product Description The Bhagavad Gita (Sanskrit , Bhagavad G t , "Song of God"), also more simply known as Gita, is a sacred Hindu scripture, considered among the most important texts in the history of literature and philosophy. The Bhagavad Gita comprises roughly 700 verses, and is a part of the Mahabharata. The teacher of the Bhagavad Gita is Lord Krishna, who is revered by Hindus as a manifestation of God (Parabrahman) himself, and is referred to within as Bhagavan, the Divine One. The content of the Gita is the conversation between Lord Krishna and Arjuna taking place on the battlefield before the start of the Kurukshetra war. Responding to Arjuna's confusion and moral dilemma about fighting his own cousins, Lord Krishna explains to Arjuna his duties as a warrior and prince and elaborates on different Yogic and Vedantic philosophies, with examples and analogies. This has led to the Gita often being described as a concise guide to Hindu theology and also as a practical, self-contained guide to life. During the discourse, Lord Krishna reveals His identity as the Supreme Being Himself (Svayam Bhagavan), blessing Arjuna with an awe-inspiring vision of His divine universal form. The Bhagavad Gita is also called G topanisad, implying its having the status of an Upanishad, i.e. a Vedantic scripture.Since the Gita is drawn from the Mahabharata, it is classified as a Smriti text. However, those branches of Hinduism that give it the status of an Upanishad also consider it a ruti or "revealed" text. As it is taken to represent a summary of the Upanishadic teachings, it is also called "the Upanishad of the Upanishads". Another title is moksa stra, or "Scripture of Liberation". About the Author Swami Gambhirananda is famous for his publication Eight Upanishads. He is the vice-president of the Ramakrishna Math Buy from Amazon US Buy from Amazon UK |

The Bhagavad Gita Author: Editor/Commentator: Eknath Easwaran Publisher: Vintage Spiritual Classics ISBN: 978-0-375-70555-7 Format: Paperback Pages: 176 List Price: £10.00 |
Synopsis:
Editorial Reviews Amazon.com Review Prince Arjuna faced a dilemma that many face sooner or later--whether to take action that is necessary yet morally ambiguous. The difference is that Arjuna's action was to wage war against his own family. With the armies arrayed, Arjuna loses his nerve. Krishna, his charioteer and incarnation of divine consciousness, begins to teach him the nature of God and of himself, that Arjuna can attain liberation through union with God, and that there are several available paths. And so the most famous and revered of all Hindu Scriptures goes on to teach the paths of knowledge, devotion, action, and meditation, becoming the seed for all the Hindu systems of philosophy and religion that followed. For all of its profundity, Eknath Easwaran manages to translate the Gita in easy prose that neither panders nor obscures. Coupled with his thorough introduction, Easwaran's version comes off on all the levels it should: as a guide to action, devotional Scripture, a philosophical text, and inspirational reading. So what does Arjuna finally do? He follows his dharma, of course, as we all must. --Brian Bruya Review "Maintaining a careful balance between introductions to each chapter and the text itself, Easwaran transposes the spirit of the Gita into our society's consciousness without compromising the spiritual depth. . . . Strongly recommended" -- Choice "The best translation." -- Streame --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. Buy from Amazon US Buy from Amazon UK |

The Bhagavatgita Author: Editor/Commentator: S. Radhakrishnan Publisher: Harper Collins ISBN: 8172230877 Format: Paperback Pages: 388 List Price: £15.00 |
Synopsis:
Editorial Reviews Review (Sanskrit: "Song of the Lord") One of the greatest and most beautiful of the Hindu scriptures. It forms part of Book VI of the Indian epic the Mahabharata ("Great Epic of the Bharata Dynasty") and is written in the form of a dialogue between the warrior Prince Arjuna and his friend and charioteer, Krishna, who is also an earthly incarnation of the god Vishnu. The Bhagavadgita is of a later date than the major parts of the Mahabharata and was probably written in the 1st or 2nd century AD. The poem consists of 700 Sanskrit verses divided into 18 chapters. The dialogue takes place on the field of battle, just as the great war between the Pandavas and the Kauravas is about to begin. The two armies stand opposing each other, and, on seeing many of his friends and kinsmen among those lined up on the other side, Prince Arjuna hesitates. He considers whether it would not be better to throw down his arms and allow himself to be slain rather than to engage in a just, but cruel, war. Krishna points out to him that the higher way is the dispassionate discharge of his duty, performed with faith in God. The Bhagavadgita goes far beyond the ethical question with which it begins, to consider broadly the nature of God and the means by which mortals can know him. --The Merriam-Webster Encylopedia of Literature Product Description 18th edn; Dimensions: 20x13x2.6 cm Buy from Amazon US Buy from Amazon UK |

Editorial Reviews Product Description This book is an exceptional summary and explanation of the wisdom contained in the Bhagavad Gita, one of the world's greatest spiritual classics and a superb guide to the inner life. While many have commented on the Gita, few combined fluency in English, deep spiritual experience, and a life long grounding in the Vedanta tradition. Sri Jnanananda Bharati (popularly known as Sr. R. Krishnaswami Aiyar of Tirunelveli in his purvashrama) shares his valuable and practical understanding of the Gita. He was an uncomprromising scholar who enjoyed the felicity of pen to put his views in beautiful English. His logical presentation of the various subjects discussed in the Gitra will satisfy the minds of the young, who look for reasons for accepting the philosophical truths. This book as valuable both as a spiritual stimulator and as a literary work. |

Bhagavadgita, The Celestial Song Author: Raphael Editor/Commentator: Publisher: AUREA VIDYA ISBN: 978-1-931406-13-0 Format: Paperback Pages: 448 List Price: $19.00 Extract Link |
Synopsis:
Book Description The Bhagavadgita belongs to the VI book of the Mahabharata, the great Indian epic attributed to the legendary Vyasa. It is a poetic and philosophical work which in time is placed in the V century B.C. Together with the Brahmasutra and the classical Upanisads it constitutes the Prasthanatraya, the Threefold Science of Vedanta. The Bhagavadgita came to light in a moment of both contrasts and new inner requirements of the Indian people. It contributed to the vitality of the upanisadic flame of Knowledge, while it pacified the prevailing philosophical and spiritual debates of the times. The Gita clarified the unity of Truth in its multifarious aspects, and in so doing it provided everybody, in a wise and enlightened way, the opportunity to follow without doctrinal conflicts the most appropriate path for everyone. In the Preface to the book, Raphael indicates four points which are essential to the comprehension of the text in the appropriate dimension: Traditional comprehension of the concept of the Divine. Comprehension of the moment and event that determined the birth of the Gita. Traditional comprehension of the social orders. Comprehension of the right approach to the various ways leading to the Divine. The value of the Gita is paramount, if one just thinks that it hinges on action, which is at the base of life and which cannot be avoided or relinquished by anyone, as it reveals, in a world permeated with movement and conflict, the secret of action without action . Under this perspective it can be of fundamental importance to the Westerners who are essentially more in favor of action than of contemplation. For one who is on the plane of action, not to become enslaved and dominated by activism, it is necessary to comprehend perfect acting devoid of the imprisoning attachment-desire, and to transcend individual qualifications. In fact, where the individual separating ego rules, there also are revealed its aberrant attributes which cause conflict and pain; and, sooner or later, the individual who places itself in such a condition cannot but find, like Arjuna, its battlefield (kuruksetra) or the field of discipline and energetic re-education (tapahksetra). Raphael s commentary unfolds along a psychological, philosophical and initiatory thread with specific reference to the ksatriya (the lawmakers and warriors social order) initiation. Raphael points out that under certain aspects we are all ksatriyas, because we are all engaged in a struggle, at times unequal, between knowledge-vidya and ignorance-avidya. The Bhagavadgita, as all authentic traditional teachings, is not indicating quietistic or finalistic attitudes, nor possible flights, but it nails us down to our responsibilities ( Forced by karma inherent in your nature despite your will, one day you will do that which, being now at a loss, you refuse to do , XVIII, 60) and to our unavoidable duty-dharma: that of comprehending, transforming and transcending ourselves. Editorial Reviews About the Author VYASA is the Rsi who ordered the texts of the Vedas, the Mahabharata and the Puranas.
