ISBN: 978-81-208-3338-8
Format: Hardcover

Synopsis: Editorial Reviews

Product Description
This is the first scholarly book devoted to the study of the term dharma with in the broad scope of Indian cultural and religious history. Most generalizations about Indian culture and religion upon close scrutiny turn out to be inaccurate. An exception undoubtedly is the term dharma. This term and the notions underlying it clearly constitute the most central feature of Indian civilization down the centuries, irrespective of linguistic, sectarian, or regional differences. The nineteen papers included in this collection deal with many significant historical manifestations of the term dharma. These studies by some of the leading scholars in the respective fields will both present a more nuanced picture of the semantic history of dharma by putting contours onto the flat landscape we have inherited and spur further studies of this concept so central for understanding the cultural history of the Indian subcontinent.

Product Description
The ocean of Hindu scriptural wisdom in the form of teachings of ancient masters of the religion is too massive for a single individual. This book presents, however, a compact connected collection of such wisdom from the vast and deep literature on Spiritual Hindu Thought. Presenting the esoteric meanings and significance of numerous names of Gods, through the words of Rishis, it explains the philosophical foundations of Hinduism, rooted in the Upanisads, the Gita and other ancient scriptures. A glimpse of the synthesis of religion and art as exhibited by the Divine Dance in the Nataraja temple of Chidambaram is also provided.

From the Author
The book has been written to communicate with the large body of young aspirants to spiritual wisdom, but who do not know where to start and how to go about it.  It therefore covers a wide spectrum of information without getting into too many technical essays which may obstruct the flow of interest. The constant awareness of God's presence is the running thread throughout the religion of Hinduism and that is also the running thread of the book.  How this can become the very breath of a living Hindu in all his activities is the content of the book. The authentic background for the presentation is the age-old body of scriptures for which there is no dearth in Hindu tradition.

Format: Mass Market Paperback

List Price: £5.99
Synopsis: Editorial Reviews

Product Description
A guide to the nature and function of Hinduism. Hinduism is unique among the great religions in that it had no founder but grew gradually over a period of 5000 years, absorbing and assimilating all the religions and cultural movements in India. Consequently it has no Bible or "Koran" or "Dhammapadam" to which controversies can be referred for resolution. Many works such as the "Vedas", the "Upanishads" and the "Bhagavad-Gita" are authoritative but none is exclusively so. As in Christianity there are several Hindu schools of thought and "Hinduism" clearly outlines their common beliefs and particular differences.

About the Author
Kshiti Mohan Sen was educated at the traditional Sanskrit schools of Banaras, which had been a centre of Indian learning for many centuries. He mastered Sanskrit and a large collection of modern Indian languages, and also became an expert on Indian religious texts at a young age. Along with a study of folk culture, Sen wrote several volumes on different aspects of Hinduism, including a treatise on the caste system, and a textual study of the position of women in ancient India. Following Kshiti Mohan Sen's death in March 1960, this book was prepared for publication by his grandson, Amartya Sen, who has also contributed a substantial new introduction for this edition. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.
