He was born to a Tamil-speaking Brahmin family in Tiruchuzhi, Tamil Nadu. After having attained liberation at the age of 16, he left home for Arunachala, a mountain considered sacred by Hindus, at Tiruvannamalai, and lived there for the rest of his life. Although born a Brahmin, after having attained moksha he declared himself an "Atiasrami", a Sastraic state of unattachment to anything in life and beyond all caste restrictions. The ashram that grew around him, Sri Ramana Ashram is situated at the foothill of Arunchala, to the west to the pilgrimage town of Tiruvannamalai. Sri Ramana maintained that the purest form of his teachings was the powerful silence which radiated from his presence and quieted the minds of those attuned to it. He gave verbal teachings only for the benefit of those who could not understand his silence. His verbal teachings were said to flow from his direct experience of Consciousness (Atman) as the only existing reality. When asked for advice, he recommended self-enquiry as the fastest path to moksha. Though his primary teaching is associated with Non-dualism, Advaita Vedanta, and Jnana yoga, he recommended Bhakti to those he saw were fit for it, and gave his approval to a variety of paths and practices Buy from Amazon US Buy from Amazon UK |

Happiness and The Art of Being Author: Michael James Editor/Commentator: Publisher: Trafford ISBN: 978-1-4251-2465-6 Format: Paperback Pages: 660 List Price: £27.00 Extract Link Review Link |
Synopsis:
Editorial Reviews Product Description Happiness is our essential being. The transient happiness that we seem to derive from external experiences actually arises from within ourself, and is experienced by us due to the temporary calming of our mind that occurs whenever any of our desires are fulfilled. So long as our mind attends to anything other than our own essential self-conscious being, we can never experience unqualified happiness. To experience infinite happiness, we must experience true self-knowledge -- absolutely clear consciousness of our essential being. Such is the truth revealed by Bhagavan Sri Ramana. The philosophy of Sri Ramana derives solely from his experience of self-knowledge, an experience that transcends all thought. However, because we imagine the existence of duality, we seem to lack the non-dual knowledge of our essential self-conscious being that Sri Ramana experienced as his natural state. Therefore to enable us to be firmly convinced of the absolute reality that underlies the finite consciousness that we now mistake to be ourself, he presented his philosophy to us in terms of an analysis of our present experience of ourself. However, the spiritual teachings of Sri Ramana are not just a rational philosophy, but are also a precise science and art. He intended his philosophy to serve only as the theoretical foundation upon which we should practice the empirical science of self-investigation, which is the art of keenly self-attentive and therefore perfectly thought-free being. This book is an in-depth exploration of both the philosophy and the practice of the spiritual teachings of Sri Ramana. About the Author Michael James spent more than eight years studying the original Tamil writings of Bhagavan Sri Ramana and of his foremost disciple, Sri Muruganar, in minute detail under the clear guidance of another close disciple, Sri Sadhu Om, and since the passing away of Sri Sadhu Om in 1985 he has continued to study and practise the spiritual path revealed by Sri Ramana. Together with Sri Sadhu Om, Michael has translated into English most of the original Tamil writings of Sri Ramana, and also Guru Vachaka Kovai, which is the most comprehensive and reliable collection of the sayings of Sri Ramana, recorded in 1255 Tamil verses composed by Sri Muruganar, with an additional 42 verses composed by Sri Ramana himself. Their translations of these works, which include detailed word-for-word meanings of most of the original verses composed by Sri Ramana, and their translations of many of Sri Sadhu Om's own Tamil verses, have been published in several volumes. This book contains Michael's own translations of the whole of Sri Ramana's prose treatise Nan Yar? (Who am I? ) and of most of the verses of his philosophical poems such as Upadesa Undiyar, Ulladu Narpadu, Ekatma Panchakam, Anma-Viddai and Upadesa Tanippakkal. An electronic copy of this book is available for free download on Michael's website, www.happinessofbeing.com, and many of his other writings are available on his blog, www.happinessofbeing.blogspot.com. Letters from Sri Ramanasramam Author: Editor/Commentator: Suri Nagamma Publisher: Sri Ramanasramam ISBN: 8188018104 Format: Hardcover Pages: 744 List Price: £0.00 |
Synopsis:
Editorial Reviews Review The words of this sage,Sri Ramana Maharshi still flame out in my memory like beacon lights."I pluck golden fruit from rare meetings with wise men" wrote Emerson in his diary, and it is certain that I plucked whole basketfuls during my talks with Sri Ramana Maharshi. Our best philosophers of Europe could not hold a candle to him.. --Paul Brunton Product Description Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi preached silence by observing it Himself and Ashramites, aspiring for spiritual advancement sat at the holy feet of Bhagavan, imbibing the lessons of that silence. Occasionally,Bhagavan spoke on spirtual matters. On such occasions,a few devotees recorded whatever He said: and amongst them Nagamma, compiler of these letters, was one. When Nagamma became an asramite, she renounced everything and whilst sitting at the feet of the mastershe felt an irresistible urge to record the disussions devotees were having with Him and,and as she began recording them, found that this work was a sort of sadhana for herself and so began writing them in the shape of letters to her brother inMadras.273 letters were thus written-each one shown to Bhagavan for any corrections before being posted. The ashram published the first 75 letters during the life time of Bhagavan and they were read out in his presence. The remaining 198 letters were published susequently in four different volumes. The depth of wisdom and knowledge contained in the cryptic sayings of bhagavan,is a veritable mine of information, presented in a simple and easily understandable manner and is well worth careful study. This present volume contains the two books published previously under the same author -- Letters from Sri Ramansramam and Letters abd Recollections from Sri Ramanasramam. Synopsis:
Editorial Reviews Product Description The author has packed into this small volume all of the essential information relating to the teachings of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi(1879-1950),the great Indian sage. The life of Sri Ramana Mahrshi fills us us with wonder. As a teenager, hardly seventeen,he realised the self through a spontaneous act of Self-enquiry without any conscious effort on his part,or any trainining imparted by a teacher. He left his home in 1896,came to Arunachala (Tiruvannamalai)where he lived as an all-renouncing sage,in a state of continuous self-absorption for a period of fifty four years until his mahanirvana in 1950. The instructions given by Sri Raman to his early devotees are all portrayed by the author. They have a lasting value. Also included are Paul Brunton's experiences. Sri Maharshi's message is that self-knowledge is not something to be acquired afresh. It is only becoming aware of one's own natural state of Pure Being, through self-enquiry. The spirit of this simple but profound message has been captured by the author in his presentation. About the Author Arthur Osborne(1906-70) was an ardent devotee of Sri Ramana Maharshi and particularly well known as the Founder Editor of the Mountain Path, the spiritual journal of Sri Ramanasramam. Ramana, Shankara and the Forty Verses : The Essential Teachings of Advaita Author: Ramana Maharshi Editor/Commentator: Intro. Alan Jacobs Publisher: Watkins Publishing ISBN: 8120819888 Format: Paperback Pages: 160 List Price: £9.99 |
Synopsis:
Editorial Reviews Product Description Ramana Maharshi and Shankara are two of the greatest and most important sages in the tradition of Advaita-the Vedic state of non-dualism, or the oneness of the self and Brahma. Shankara, born in the 8th century, consolidated the teaching of the Upanishadic and Brahmana Sutras into a practical philosophy of living, while Ramana Maharshi revived these principles and beliefs in the 20th century, bringing about a worldwide renaissance of Advaita. This invaluable volume contains the pearls of their combined wisdom, including some of Shankara's major works translated by Ramana. Among them: Shankara's famous ?The Crest Jewel of Discrimination" and Maharshi's seminal ?Forty Verses on Reality." About the Author Shankara is known as the Shankaracharya which means Acharya "one who sets the example". He was a child prodigy, and a genius. At 8 he was reputed to have mastered the Vedas. At 16 he had written his commentary on the Brahma Sutras. He later wrote seminal commentaries on the Bhagavad Gita and the principal Upanishals and was determined to save the Vedic teaching from onslaughts by Buddhists and Jams. Many miracles were reported during his lifetime. At the age of 32 he suddenly died having established monastic orders in the four corners of India. These orders have flourished, even until today and have played a great part in the spiritual heritage of India. Sri Ramana Maharshi (1897 to 1950) was born into a Brahman family. His father died suddenly in 1892 and this death experience led to his Self-Realisation. He then moved to the sacred mountain Arunachala, Tiruvannamalai, which he never left. In 1907 he was given the name Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi by the famed Poet-Saint Ganapati-Muni. In 1922 his mother died and his Ashram was built. He is universally acknowledged as one of the greatest spiritual figures of the Twentieth Century, as he taught largely through silence. Buy from Amazon US Buy from Amazon UK |
