Product Description

Atmabodha (Self-Knowledge) is a well-known prakarana upon which many students of Advaita Vedanta have written commentaries. The explanation of the terms and of the expressions utilized in the Scriptures is useful for the student's comprehension of the subtle themes that are often hidden there.

The knowledge of this introductory text becomes, therefore, an essential prerequisite for those who want to comprehend Advaita Vedanta.

Sankara addresses those who have purified themselves through the practice of austerity (tapas), attained peace in their hearts (antanam), liberated from all fear, freed from the desires of the senses (vitaraginam), and now aspire to one thing only: identity with the Being-without-a-second (mumuksutva).demonstrating that the Absolute is One-without-a-second and that the embodied jiva is equally "That".

From the Publisher

The whole Hindu Tradition is essentially founded on the Veda, meaning Sacred Science and Traditional Knowledge par excellence. The diverse metaphysical and cosmological conceptions of India are not at all incompatible. They are developments, darsana (perspectives), of the one doctrine constituted by the Veda, principle and foundation of all derived Branches.

This edition of atmabodha, which is here presented in English, has been translated directly from Sanskrit, edited and commented, by Raphael.

His commentary on Sankara's slokas is based on the following criteria:

a) To remain faithful to the Advaita and Asparsa Tradition to which the text belongs.
b) To make it accessible to the Western reader by using a conceptual methodology that harmonizes with the Western mind structure and its receptiveness. To do this without impoverishing, vulgarizing, nor forcing Advaita into a "system".
c) To stimulate the reader's consciousness in a suitable way, as Raphael is a living and practicing advaitin-asparsin.

In a Traditional conception only the Doctrine has value, not the individual presenting it. It is for this reason that Raphael focuses on an effective transmission of the Teaching, shunning all desire to express personal views concerning the Doctrine. He is a faithful interpreter and his efforts are concentrated on providing the Doctrine with incisive and clear meaning.

Review
In Svami Nikhilananda's words: «This work, which contains only forty-six sloka is an excellent vade mecum (handbook) for students of advanced courses in Advaita philosophy». --Svami Nikhilananda's quotation is from: «How to Discriminate the Spectator from the spectacle», Appendix II, Adrien Maisonneuve, Paris. (French edition)

Product Description
SHANKARA invites us to discern (viveka) between Real and non-real, between atman (Self) and non-atman (non-Self), between Infinite and finite, between Life and death. Man's greatest conflicts stem from his attachment to and his identification with the non-atman, with the finite. Knowledge on the other hand, leads to the unveiling of sat, of True Existence. A star is born, grows, matures, ages and dies, and these events are an uninterrupted flow of change. There is never a moment when the physical world undergoes no change or atomic or molecular transformation. If we are in agreement that the Absolute must be eternally constant , unvarying then we cannot look for it in the world of phenomena, whether objective or subjective. Thus the Drgdrsyaviveka expounds a detailed description of the different kinds of concentration (samadhi), of the three theories empirically concerning jiva, and other questions of vital importance to the Vedanta teaching.

Product Description
INSIGHTS INTO VEDANTA is an English translation of Tattwabodha with a running commentary, based on Sri Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda’s teachings.Sri Sankaracharya is the putative author of this work. The original Tattvabodha in Sanskrit is apparently a simple text, and the purpose of the author is to acquaint the lay reader with Advaita. But the text is profound. It also anticipates discussion and deep thought.

The present book has the text in Devanagari and transliteration in English and also word for word for meaning in English.Even those with a nodding acquaintance with Sanskrit can undrstand the text correctly.

A good book for the one trying to understand Advaita Vedanta.

Swami Sunirmalananda, the translator is a monk of the Ramakrishna order. His rich experience in the editorial line has helped him in bringing out a classic book.

Synopsis: Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Composed by the great sage of Advaita Vedanta, Adi Sankara, this work gives an exposition of the symbols of puja (worship) in light of Nonduality. Written as a dialogue between a disciple and a Guru, the disciple first asks, "What manner of worship is prescribed for the One existing as undivided Being-Consciousness-Bliss with no second, without misconceptions, and of one nature?" He then asks similar questions about the details of such in the context of utmost Nonduality, and, starting with the ninth verse, the Guru replies in the light of the Knowledge of that utmost Nonduality.

About the Author
The late Dr. H. Ramamoorthy was a foremost Sanskrit scholar and expert in Tamil. He was renowned for his humility, subtle humor, devotion, and a superlative clarity of expression even when dealing with the loftiest Hindu scriptural texts. During the period from 1989 to 2001, Dr. H. Ramamoorthy and Nome worked in close collaboration to translate numerous Advaita Vedanta texts, from Sanskrit and Tamil, into English.

Nome is a spiritual teacher at Society of Abidance in Truth, known by the acronym SAT, which established and maintains a temple for Nondual Self-Knowledge in California. Nome teaches Advaita Vedanta, especially as is contained in the teachings of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi. These teachings are those found in traditional Advaita Vedanta as expounded by Adi Sankaracharya, Ribhu, and the Upanishads. Nome is a teacher of this spiritual knowledge, an author of the same, and a translator of Vedanta texts.

Review
'This book provides an excellent introduction to Samkara's work, while making a number of original arguments that are sure to be influencial in future studies on Samkara' - Brian Black, South Asia Research, Vol. 26 (2) --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Product Description

Samkara (c.700 CE) has been regarded by many as the most authoritative Hindu thinker of all time. A great Indian Vedantin brahmin, Samkara was primarily a commentator on the sacred texts of the Vedas and a teacher in the Advaitin teaching line. This book serves as an introduction to Samkara's thought which takes this as a central theme. The author develops an innovative approach based on Samkara's ways of interpreting sacred texts and creatively examines the profound interrelationship between sacred text, content and method in Samkara's thought. The main focus of the book is on Samkara's teaching method. This method is, for Samkara, based on the Upanishads' own; it is to be employed by Advaitin teachers to draw pupils skilfully towards that realisation which is beyond all words. Consequently, this book will be of interest not only to students and scholars of Indian philosophy, but to all those interested in the relation between language and that which is held to transcend it.

Product Description
A classic text on the path to God through knowledge. The basic teaching is that God alone is the all-pervading reality; the individual soul is none other than the universal soul.

According to Shankara, it is the ignorance of our real nature that causes suffering and pain. The desire for happiness is essentially a longing to awaken to who and what we truly are.

Through the path of self-knowledge, Shankara clearly teaches how to awaken from ignornce created by the mind, and abide in the peace of our true nature.

From the Publisher
Shankara was under no illusions about this world. For this reason, he is able to describe so powerfully the complete transformation of the universe that takes place before the eyes of the illumined seer, when the world indeed becomes a paradise.

Sri Shankaracharya's spiritual classic,Vivekachudamani, has been one of the most favoured works among the spiritual aspirants treading the path as delineated in Vedanta. The commentaries of Sri Shankaracharya, though astounding in their spiritual depth and vastness, are to a great extent abstruse for the lay aspirant. But in his Vivekachudamani,Shankara has presented the essentials of vedanta in a language at one simple as well as poetic.Over and above this Swami Ranganathananda's commentary on it sets it in the modern backdrop with his distinctive emphasis on human welfare. It is an illuminating as well as inspiring piece of work for spiritual asppirants all over the world.

Product Description
Sankara, the eighth-century Indian philosopher, is generally regarded as the greatest thinker in the long history of Indian philosophy as well as in the metaphysical tradition known as Vedanta. Advaita Vedanta, the school or system founded by him, stresses the Advaita or nondualist approach to the problem of existence and ultimate reality, and has been the main current of thought in India for hundreds of years. Most of Sankara`s works are commentaries on other classics of Indian thought, like Upanisads, the Bhagavadgita, and the Brahmasutra. The Upadesasahasri, or " A Thousand Teachings, "here critically edited and translated into English, is, however, the only independent and non-commentary work that can safely be attributed to him; the other independent writings traditionally ascribed to him are all probably spurious

Product Description
In entering the study of the Advaita Vedanta, it is good to keep in mind some preliminary notions which we might say are necessary for a correct comprehension of the whole. What is Advaita Vedanta? What means or instruments does it utilize in its attempt to comprehend Reality? What is the nature of its aim? If we begin by answering these questions, we will be ready to follow with the right intelligence the message given by the great SANKARA in VIVEKACUDAMANI The path which is outlined here is not for the majority, quite the contrary. It is for those who, having attained “maturity”, tend towards full Awakening. It is for those who want to bring about a profound revolution within themselves; and this requires an act of courage, of steadfastness and, at the same time, of great humility.

From the Publisher

Advaita Vedanta is pure metaphysics because its fundamental theme is the search for the absolute as pure Real.

One of the instruments with which it seeks to become attuned to the Absolute is Viveka, intellective discernment at a suprasensory level (nous). The Absolute cannot be comprehended with our sensory-mental instrument, which is imperfect, but it can be comprehended with an adequate supramental cognitive instrument, which acts as a bridge.

The analytical and discursive mind, being relative, can comprehend only relative data, just as the sense of sight can detect only a certain limited range of colors. The final aim of Vedanta is to give the individual complete liberation from individual and universal ignorance-avidya, demonstrating that the Absolute is One-without-a-second and that the embodied jiva is equally "That".
